Brahmastra Part One: Shiva movie review | Film is good on visuals, but lacks on story

Brahmastra Part One: Shiva is a story about a character called Shiva, how he comes to know he has certain powers, how he uses his power. That’s all you get to see in the movie. What is Brahmastra and what is the role of Ranbir Kapoor in it that’s what you get to see in this movie. You might have seen in the trailer already that Ranbir Kapoor is Agni Astra in the movie (a person with special powers of fire). You will get to explore in detail Agni Astra’s role in the movie. Love story of Shiva (character played by Ranbir) and Isha (character played by Alia) also shown in the movie). More focus is given on the love story than the Brahmastra story in the movie. Story is high on VFX and visual elements, only the story and content of this movie takes a backseat. Dialogues are also not that impressive. They appear like a speech type. (preachy). In some of the dialogues, they have used hard words in Sanskrit and Urdu, which are not easy to understand. Action scenes were good. Story narration was good. Film first half was full build up. Second half of the movie was action. That seemed a little stetched up. Movie duraton was 2 hour 40 minutes. Movie content could have been cut short to almost 2 hours. Story was not that powerful. Even the film seemed a little long. If the movie story could have been more powerful and little less duration, film could have been better.

Shah Rukh Khan cameo is there in this movie. Whatever 10-12 minutes he is there on screen, you will be able to witness magic. Amitabh Bachchan has his own aura with his powerful dialogue delivery and voice. Nagarjuna has also done his role decently. Ranbir Kapoor as Shiva has also given good performance. He has managed to shine well in the role assigned to him. Alia Bhatt is okay. She has done little overacting in some of the scenes. She has taken ‘Shiva’ character name atleast 10-12 times in the movie. Shiva-Isha love story was actually not needed in this film. Film should have focused more on the Astraverse and Ranbir Kapoors character as Shiva (the person who is also called the Agni Astra). Mouni Roy has also given her best performance in the movie playing the negative character with name ‘Junoon’ in the movie.

Film is good on VFX and animation. The movie story link with Indian mythology and religion is little less in the movie. More focus on the love story. Film is good from the technical aspect point of view. Nice VFX and visual treat they have given in this movie, specially the first time in Hindi Cinema, they have come out with such huge superhero movie in competition with foreign films of Marvel and DC. Film climax scene is nice, but still could have been better. Very few moments are there in the movie where you will get goosebumps. Film animation was also seen in the credit section of the movie. They have nicely presented the credit section towards the end of the movie. So many big actors were there in this movie. It was a star studded affair but still the movie hasn’t utilized all these actors effectively. Film music is nice. Songs are really good. CInematography is good. This movie is a surely must watch movie for a theatre experience, specially in 3D. Story failed to connect with the audience. But overall a good presentation to look forward to. Too much attention has been given to the technical aspects and the story takes a backseat. I rate Brahmastra Part One: Shiva (2.5 stars out of 5).
